You know the drill, you do I wish I could meet my younger self who was still in primary school, showing her that I've finally made her very first characters that she draw, has been coming all this way. But probably she would be horrified seeing a slouchy, tired lady with wacky dyed hair--who appears out of the blue just for showing her something, and run in the process. Oh well. Anyway, enough about me! When I was a little girl, I was so immersed with shoujo manga more than shounen manga, so my way of thinking was somehow a bit marchen-ish and yumeshikou aren't I today as well, but hey, I know where to draw the line between fiction and reality, thank you. Hence, when drawing characters and making stories, it would never be far from either magical girls or something like that yes, yes I'm a fan of Tokyo Mew Mew, Mermaid Melody, W.I.T.C.H, Winx Club, among other similar stuff. Aaaaand, that brought me into this: This is the sketch when I was... on elementary school, that's for sure but I forgot on what grade when I was drawing this. I could say that these five were… my very initial OCs? Before heck I even know the concept of what OC is. Yet, I won’t call them like something avant-garde original because hahaha their design was a blatant rip-off of Trollz and W.I.T.C.H dfghjjhgfhj because I took the color scheme and elemental properties from those two series. The imitation phase at its finest, and younger me was so naive. A good learning experience, though, I admit. Ah, I made a story about them, too. Mm, your typical magical girl premise about a girl who accidentally found??? obtained???? her power something like that in a sacred cave when she was on a study tour come to think of it now, why the heck you slipped and going to unknown place by yourself, kiddo, back to your tour group, smh and then BAM she became magical girl and needed to search for other members as allies. That was as far as I could remember. The rest is history because I never finish it. Cliche af, I know. NamesI still remember the fragments of them, besides of their story. That they were named from of some planet’s moons. The main girl was named Titan……… which now has unfortunate implication for me since when I heard that name, I quickly correlate it with Attack on Titan, I hate myself ok. She named after moon of Saturn and got the power of Aether a.k.a Quintessence a.k.a everything that makes her the strongest among the five because hey, she's the leader!!!! Also, a.k.a aether-bender yea let's call it as that even though this is not about avatar. I gave her name as such mainly because I wanted her to be complete with spotlight that she!! is!! the!! protagonist!! Something unsubtle like that. The second one... I forgot either it was between Deimos or Miranda. Well, Deimos is a fire-bender who named after a moon of Mars heh, I have a slight knowledge back then about astronomical things, thanks Encyclopedia for kids, you were rocking hard before Internet *thumbs up* . Then Miranda, a water-bender who named after a moon of Uranus. It is quite ironic because she was supposedly named after a moon of Mercury, or Neptune to complete the theme naming. But eh… I forgot why I chose Miranda. Perhaps because it sounds feminine and gentle? Next, an air-bender named Ariel, taken after a moon of Uranus, like Miranda. The last and the youngest one is Callista, named after a moon of Jupiter, Calisto. DesignI did revamp them in… around 2011 or 2012??? However, instead of calling it as such, it was more like redrawing them, since I didn't give any distinction whatsoever. The name, the height, the color image, everything still remained the same. At the very first, their initial setting was in a middle-school or high-school, just like the typical magical girls’ genre. They also have their civilian form and whatnot, all in all, human at its initial. While I’m giving props for my younger self to design characters on her own, looking back at their old drawing, I was like… having this sudden urge to want redoing them from the very scratch. Their design just too basic and dfghjgfdgh it drives an irrational hatred for me it's ok younger self I forgive you. This time around, after determining to fully revamping them, I contemplated to alter their species. Not as human, but as entity that represents their elements. Yes, I have already became a grandma, so I just can’t write anymore something like that, hahaha. I don’t have any plan to make a story for them, nor incorporating them to the verses that I already have, might as well turning them into a blank slate with adequate details. However, having dabbling a lot with slice-of-life genre and consequently not touching fantasy stuff for quite a long time, admittedly it made me confused, very, about how to revamp them. Because yes, fantasy is not my forte now, talk about irony. One thing for sure, I want their outfit basically consisted of the very same thing, but it has glaring difference so is not as uniform, for variation. Like idol singers. I'm so thankful that a friend of mine giving a wholesome contribution and even designing me rough sketches for their initial image so I'm delighted, yyyess. It's pretty!! and seriously way better than I expected. *thumbs up* I was satisfied with her sketch, but it also gives me room for tweaking things or two per my liking. Considering the approval that she gave for tweaking it, in the end, it becomes like this: way too different from the very initial design, I know. I know. First thing first, I deliberately omitted Titan because I don't find any suitable concept for her, and that she's basically turning into Math in SM! hahaha although the two is not same person. The other reason is, just like I said already, I won't making stories for them anymore, so I left them as... personification of spirits and/or elements, rather than magical girls. Yes. Fire is associated with Ifrit and dragon, so I made Deimos has dragon horns mom, she reminds me of Lucifer now though, orz orz. Earth is associated with Dryad and elves. Water is associated with Undine. Air is associated with Pixie... and those were what I had in mind, but seeing her design with avian-based is not bad, too. Hence, they have weird ears(?). As Deimos color image was purple, I changed it into red-orange, because, yeah, she's Fire, for fitting the theme. She is probably the one that has much modification than the others? The color of her hair still retains, however, although it's lighter now because it was dark purple before. I like making it twisty as well, as opposed to her long straight her. Idk, giving her long hair now seems iffy, and that as the fire, she is bound to be aggressive. So, I thought long hair will only serves as hindrance in attacking attacking what, exactly. I give props to the long stiletto boots my friend draw because daaamn girl she slays. I always think that her suits here is body-tight, like that Britney Spears wears in Oops, I Did it Again MV, so yyes. Perfect. Callista changed a lot as well, from pink to green, because nature and earth. I was confused whether to give her hair green or brown as the main color. In the end, screw it, and it becomes brown with green ombre (laugh). I was also thinking of giving floral pattern on her attires but it's somehow too much and will make her like a plant fairy instead of earth spirit, so I scratch that idea. Her transparent thingy is still pretty much taking inspiration from flower petal, however! I like with my friend choice to give her a bloomer/shorts, since that’s what I always have in mind for Callista. Opposing Deimos’ top that is straightly cut, hers is more… leafy in the top and woody in the bottom. Something like that. Miranda is my favorite probably, even since I was younger yeah, sentimentality there because I'm a Cancerian. Giving off impression that she is somehow the softest and gentlest, so I draw her somehow... rounder and curvier than the others. I like how my friend designs her outfit though, it's fun! Mirroring the water that is wavy, her outfit is just that wavy, a polar opposite from Deimos that sharp and straight. Since water is also close to transparency and clarity, I also gave those elements on her outfit. Hence her sleeves are translucent. So does her gown. Like… it gradually becomes transparent, like water. Sketching and imagining it is fun. Playing with the effect and transparency in the actual process is not, however. For Ariel, honestly, I never like her hairstyle, like, her forehead was very prominent hahaha… here, I gave her bangs to compensate it. Just like the others, her hair is actually two-tones, but it’s much subtler than the others since her basic color is already light. I never thought Ariel would be the manliest because it was always Deimos who fills the role, hahaha. Nevertheless, I like her new design though. I like it very much. She’s tall and slim, and it just fits her good. She still retaining the long pants but now with more class. As they are blank slates now, I don’t think I will draw them much. I’m categorizing them in same place with Wei, the cancer gijinka, currently.
Anyway, though! I’m feeling satisfied that I’m done the deed to revamp them for good, and that’s all that matters. Thank you. [Last updated on August 2020] Comments are closed.
