The Märchen Chaser Been awhile since writing the last conception notes and yeah, here it is, the last for this verse. 2019 and 2020. Come to think of it... I apparently drew him often, huh, in my hiatus year... No 2021 because I haven't draw any, even though, yes, I plan to draw him a lot in this year. Just wait and see, haheho Build up story and notesWhen I think of making things into a set of group, I usually quite adamant with my decision on deciding how many people I put on that group. Hence, the kids are seven, and the adults are four, as I already set the specific dynamic for the ensemble. However, I think it was around half a year (or so?) after I brought shitenno to the light, I got some kind of variation idea. Since all the cast has been attending school, so why don't I have someone who acts as a nullifier, by not attending anything at all. That was the excuse. Before I reached that point, though, actually, I have some kind of consideration on making a whole new ensemble based on specialized school noted in the verse. (The Charm School, The Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts, etc.) Thinking that it would be too much for me to handle, and to think that I cannot afford to make new kids for the sake of completion, as well as I don't want to make kids with overlapping personality, I just cut that out. And yeah there's still no information about the three remaining big school, let alone this small scale academies, so, why bother. And yes, leaving the school-less option as the one I wanted to tackle. At first when deciding who would it be, I did think that it would be someone around the age of the kids. However, after some consideration, I thought that it would be reasonable to have them in the adult group. This is due to the fact that even if they were not attending the school, I thought they still can have a link to other adult, but still can be separated as well as a special case (like Philosophy). I honestly forgot what basis on making Darius as the one. Back then, I didn't have any idea at the slightest to link Rayne and Imogen. At all. So... when I drew out the character relation, I thought it was nice to have Imogen and Rayne related for some kind of twist. The initial twist was that it was Rayne's mother who becomes Imogen blood sister. After some thorough consideration that it would make a lot of hassle (+ I didn't really want to add subtle and unnecessary drama bits on Imogen and Bayu relationship at that time), I decided that it would be Rayne's father instead who have link to Imogen. Thus, Darius exists. Technically and story-wise, he exists for a long time before Rayne, of course by being her father. I was quite troubled whether I sure want to go with making the parent character as a member of ensemble instead of the NPC/supporting in the plot or not. Since at that time, my thought of process was "If I'm going to draw one of the kids' parents, I should draw the other parents, too," and I just... don't want to do that, HAHAHA. However, a friend gave me assurance that it was okay to do that, since she also has similar case by having an uncle and niece in an ensemble, so I just went along after hearing that. While Imogen is indeed the special kid among the ensemble, I want to make Darius as a... how to put this, both a filler to a role, as well as placed in special category, so he would not ruin the four man ensemble I had for shitenno. The kind of special that different from Imogen based on technical context. I always think of Darius as some kind of hero from another story, since he technically belongs in the parents club as opposed to the kids. Nowadays, though, even if I talk about the four way a lot, Darius would come to chime in time to time, when I have idea of drawing five ensemble in some special occasion, hahaaa. Still, he has his own identity as a person, and a wizard on his own. So, when digging on that, I tried my best to throw the image "Rayne's Papa" off the window and think of him as he is. Building him is fun. And that's what I thought as of late. Sure, I can go all the way angst and traumatic past with Imogen. But as for Darius, while he considerably has better......? um, yeah, better... past than Imogen, and now living his life fully, with a wife and child, I just like to attribute him in meriba style when draw him. Design-wise, since I always jokingly referred SM cast as the AMK cast parents, I blatantly draw out his design from Alchemy, or what would be Chemistry now. I did write a lot of drabbles with serious tone between Alchemy and Social Epistemology (a.k.a Sociology), and... Since I couldn't post shippy subtext stuff on the real thing in SM even though it's serious, I retooled it as the base of his dynamic with his wife. Upon their first meeting as strangers. That's also the reason on why his wife resembles Sociology and Rayne. As someone who has been walking the Earth, the image of Yunan from Magi come first to mind, so I took him as an inspiration, too. For his attire... I taking a lot of consideration that he is the traditional wizard, like Imogen. So as opposed to the other three, I made him different and kind of out of place. Throwing him green and purple a lot as well, since it's the traditional wizard color. Honestly, I've never been that good in designing things with fantasy element, but I'm quite proud with his cape. And hat. Yes, his hat is important. Needless to say, I'm glad that his image now is far cry from Alchemy/Chemistry. NameI didn't really have a hassle in deciding names, since he has a theme naming with Imogen. Darayavaus was the no-brainer choice, mainly due to its Persian root, and the fact that it can be shorted as Darius, something he currently uses as his name. Darius George also fits quite nicely though the image of Curious George tbh always come into mind, too sob. I like to call him Darus or Mang Darus something like Uncle of sorts in my native since he's the oldest among the ensemble and the daddy in contextual sense. Also yeah, that name was coincidentally the name of the lodging keeper back then when I was working on the other city. Not related at all, however. BirthdayMeriba is his main element and I got his name from a folklore. So of course, his birthday should be something related to that. Seventh of April is the birth of Hans Christian Andersen, who created the Little Mermaid. So yes, it's deliberate. PersonalityTruthfully... Since I rarely make him involved with the cast, I still haven't grasp his exact personality yet. All I have in mind from the start is that he's a good guy and tries to be a good dad, but he did have misdirection and of course, doing not so good stuff. He made a lot of mistakes, but now that he's an adult, so I think he has... become a proper one. In terms of thinking. Rayne is a daddy's girl, and I think it's reciprocate, but I don't really see him as someone possessive or overprotective. He's... quite hands-free, as opposed to his wife. But when it times to be a papa wolf, he would become one for sure. Things that I took from Alchemy as his base of personality probably his daredevil side. One might not see that now, but he was a problem child on his own back then in his juvenile days hahaaaaaa though it's not as much as Imogen. Making him a generally nice guy is also boring on it's own, since I already have Tohma and Tad on that department. Hence, I gave him a shade of bluntness in his way of speaking. Not that malicious as Imogen, not as deliberate trolling as well, but he's just that type of person who would speak his mind without filter, so that might rub people in some way. Other than that, eh, pretty much a nice person to talk to, actually. RelationshipI always think to keep a minimum link for him, since he is supposed to be a satellite character. Of course, the important link is only to Imogen, Rayne, and his wife. I want to make a different sibling dynamic between this Shiraz siblings and Yankov/a siblings. I did say that back then in concepting Mish, I wanted him to become someone MIA, so I shifted that unused element to the base of Imogen/Darius. Imogen would not be what she is with all of her issues and negativity without him. It's... how to put this, it's not like he's a major player in shaping Imogen, but he is her main factor and driving force on why she becomes like that. I don't give too much contrast between Imogen and Darius, as opposed to Mish and Kay. One important thing, though, if Imogen is seemingly dark and all at a glance, yet actually light in the inside, then Darius is the opposite of that. Something like that, I guess. For his relationship with his little family... I always think he genuinely tries his best, and he loves them. I mean, he was that type of people who would run a way from responsibility back in his younger days. But now, he does think and yeah, maturing on his own. They give much impact though, on what he is now. I never have a plan on linking him to the other adults, although Bayu might know about him from Imogen's stories. I mean, he has his own world, so I just want to keep it that way. End NoteAt the very first, I was unsure whether I should write a note about him or not. Mainly due to what I said, as he was originally an NPC and not a main cast. But as of late, I come to embrace him as the part of ensemble, like what I do to Philosophy, so here it is.
Honestly, I'm surprised that I can about him this long, hahaa. Comments are closed.
